Kate Segal
State Representative for the 62nd District

State Representative Kate Segal is currently in her first term of serving the people of the 62nd State House District, which encompasses most of Calhoun County. Previously, Kate was elected to the Calhoun County Commission where she served from 2002-2008. From 2007-2008, Kate served as the Chair of the County Board.

As State Representative, Kate has been a tireless advocate for our district. Just some of her accomplishments include:

  • Working to balance the state’s budget with no tax increases.
  • Sponsoring legislation to dock legislators’ pay if they don’t balance the budget on time.
  • Authoring a crucial change in the tax code that helped Duncan Aviation save hundreds of jobs here in Calhoun County.
  • Successfully fighting to preserve funding of the Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy after the acclaimed youth program was scheduled to be eliminated.
  • As Vice Chair of the Health Policy Committee, leading a healthcare cost-reduction work group looking at practical ways to help reduce the cost of healthcare.
  • Voting to cut legislators’ salaries—including her own—by 10 percent.
  • Sponsoring consumer protection reforms to stop insurance companies from wrongfully denying or delaying legitimate property, health and auto claims.
  • Fighting to keep our schools adequately funded, knowing that an educated workforce is the best way out of our economic troubles.
  • Authoring legislation to prohibit insurance companies from raising your car insurance rates or cancelling your policy if you are in an accident that was not your fault.
  • Fighting to retain the jobs we do have while supporting numerous economic development plans that will position Michigan to attract new jobs in alternative energy and other emerging industries.
  • Sponsoring stronger protections against elder abuse to protect our seniors from unscrupulous financial predators.

Representative Segal never forgets that her job is to serve the people who sent her to Lansing. Kate and her office have made communication with the public their top priority over the last two years. Here are just a few of the things Kate has done to keep the 62nd District the peoples’ district:

  • Held weekly coffee hours throughout her district, including in Athens, Homer, Battle Creek, Albion, Springfield, Tekonsha, Marengo Township, Convis Township, and Eckford Township where constituents discuss issues with Kate in a relaxed, neighborly setting.
  • Held town hall meetings across the district on issues including: veterans issues, identity theft, access to health care, unemployment insurance issues, and home winterization strategies.
  • Kate, her staff, and a dedicated group of volunteers have knocked on more than 13,000 doors to hear concerns and offer help throughout the county.
  • Made her office into a resource and information center for her community, offering assistance to constituents with issues concerning housing, mortgages, education, unemployment, consumer protection, insurance, health care access, and many others.

Some of Kate’s career and personal accomplishments include:

  • Graduate of the Michigan Political Leadership Program at Michigan State University, where she was one of 24 selected from more than 100 state-wide candidates to receive a 2002 fellowship. The program provides public policymakers with tools needed to improve communities and to help determine how to best handle important local issues.
  • Recipient of the 2006 S.A.F.E. Place’s Ann Shafer Community Service Award, established in 1991 to recognize an individual or organization which has significantly impacted the issue of domestic violence.
  • Graduate of Kalamazoo College, where she received a Bachelors of Arts degree in Sociology, with a concentration in Public Policy and Urban Affairs.
  • Michigan House of Representatives Health Policy Analyst from 2002 to 2006.
  • Married to Mike Segal and the proud mother of their daughter, Elise.
