B.C. pays tribute to Schwarz

When Joe Schwarz walked into McCamly Plaza Hotel's Branson Ballroom on Wednesday, it was no surprise that everyone wanted to greet him.

He was, after all, the guest of honor at the 15th Operation Success dinner, a laudatory event for a distinguished member of the Battle Creek community.

But this was different; more than the diplomatic celebration of a dignitary, just short of the thronging adoration of a rock star.

Wednesday night felt like a reunion, one of Battle Creek's favorite sons home for a holiday.

The event was attended by about 300 people, a veritable who's who of Calhoun County featuring several elected officials and some of the county's most prominent and influential business and civic leaders.

Guest speakers came to the podium to thank Schwarz for his service, from the military to his career as a doctor, from the Battle Creek City Commission to the Michigan Senate to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Schwarz was described as a father, brother, friend, veteran, gentleman, Wolverine and even a "mensch," Yiddish for someone with admirable characteristics, including fortitude and firmness of purpose.

"Our county and state are a better place to live thanks to your service," said county board Chairwoman Kate Segal, D-Battle Creek.

State Rep. Lorence Wenke, R-Richland Township, applauded Schwarz for his principles and determination.

"He was willing to stand up, tell the truth and make a difference."

County Commissioner Greg Moore, R-Emmett Township, thanked Schwarz for his dedication to and love for Battle Creek.

"He could have settled anywhere. He could be anywhere in the world," Moore said. "But he stayed here, he settled here. No matter where in the world he's been, Battle Creek has always been near and dear to his heart."

In a video message, Gov. Jennifer Granholm said she was thankful for Schwarz's honest service to his city, state and country.

"He's not afraid to follow the courage of his convictions," she said.

Battle Creek Unlimited President Jim Hettinger said Schwarz's tenacity and persuasiveness may have rubbed a few people the wrong way, but have rarely failed to get people on his side of an issue.

"He's been a great leader," Hettinger said. "A lot of people may not agree with him. I've got his teeth marks on me, too, but as long as I know where he's headed, I'm going to help him get there."

And so went the long list of compliments, praise and thanks for Schwarz, but his response wasn't one of a retiring politician or a man in the twilight of his career.

"We have much to do in this community," he said, encouraging the younger generations to devote time and energy to improving Battle Creek.

"You have to get involved and stay involved," he said. "We have to commit ourselves to this community."
